ABSTRACT

The Comparative Effectiveness of Optional Medicaid Eligibility Policies: Post-ACA Implications for States

There are many reasons such as illnesses, old age, or injuries that could cause pointing problems, which include difficulty clicking on or navigating towards targets, dragging and dropping, or motion control of the mouse and cursor. The work is intending to evaluate the design of a notification system for computer users with pointing problems. The notification system aims to alert users of changes in their pointing performance via displaying a message, or showing an indicator informing them that their pointing performance has changed. The purpose of the notifications is to be used as part of a future system that adapts the computer interface based on the user’s performance for improved usability. This work was done to improve upon familiar notification techniques which can be disruptive, and try to find designs that strike a balance between visibility and disruptiveness.

The evaluation of the notification system is done through participatory design sessions with users of varying pointing abilities, ages, and computer skills. In these sessions participants were shown video clips of multiple notification designs and asked to provide feedback. It was found that the participants preferred designs that were personal, comprehensible with medium to high visibility.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Abdullah Ali graduated from the University of Maryland baltimore County in the spring of 2014 with a bachelors degree in Information Systems and a certificate in web development. Ali is currently enrolled in a masters program at UMBC studying Human-Centered Computing in the department of information systems.

GENERAL SUMMARY OF GRADUATE RESEARCH

Abdullah Ali is interested in studying the design of interaction between humans and computer system. Currently working on designing a notification system for an adaptive user interface that will assist users with limited mobile dexterity in pointing at targets when using a computer.
