ABSTRACT
“Get Out!” Examining Disproportionality of School Discipline and Suspension for Black Girls
In the age of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiatives, programs and polices aimed towards increasing the high school graduation rate for Black boys, the unique school pushout factors for Black girls often go overlooked. Recent national studies have shown that Black girls are suspended six times more than White girls and are also suspended at higher rates than girls of any other race or ethnicity and most boys. This presentation takes a critical look at the social and structural causes of their disproportionate school discipline, suspension and school-related arrest rates and proposes solutions for school districts, educators and families to keep Black girls in the classroom.
